Final Cut Workshop Day 2: Composite

For day two of the workshop in Final Cut, we learned to compile videos and change some effects on them. In addition, I added sound (the beginning of Deerhunter's "Earthquake" off of their recent album Halcyon Digest). The video is taken from two previous Time Studio projects so you may recognize it.

Final Cut Workshop Day 1: Cropping

In my Time Studio class this week we were introduced to Final Cut, a professional (or more professional than imovie) video editing software. On the first day we learned how to crop videos and overlay them. Here I took two shots of myself and cropped one in half so that half of the other is seen as well. This is not supposed to be a completed piece, just the product of an exercise.

Op Art

For Surface Research: Create and paint a design for an optical illusion. I worked on two 2' x 2' birch wood boards. The tones in the board on the left are slightly darker than the one on the right. I was trying to reference a landscape in this piece at two different times of day. I think I could have made the difference more clear however, so it didn't look as much like I just couldn't match the colors. But this was a fun project overall :)

HIV/AIDS Documentary

For my Time Studio class over break I had to make a 2-5 minute documentary on a socio-political issue. I decided to research the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The documentary is (hopefully) self-explanatory. There are a few issues with sound and words cutting off that I wish I could have fixed. Major thanks to Georgette King, Michael Stalker, Danielle Haley, and my sweet mama for helping me throughout the construction of this project.

Printing

My next Surface Research project was to cut a lino-cut block and print it. Then, we had to take the print and give it a 3D element. I decided to upholster a chair, stamp my lamp shade, and frame a sheet of it like a picture. If I were to add anything to the project in the future I think a good improvement would be a stamped carpet. This was a fun project! I especially like the way the chair turned out. And of course, thanks to the lovely chair model- my suitemate Hannah!

Piano Pixelation

Here's another stop motion I did for my Time Studio class. VCU has a piano in the student commons available to students. Luckily, when I went to shoot the pictures for this stop motion, there was a guy there that not only played the piano beautifully, but also was willing to let me take pictures of him while he did! I recorded the audio separately and then combined it with the images afterward on the computer. One cool thing I learned while talking to this guy (forgot to get his name) was that the only thing he can play on the piano is this specific song. He taught himself to play it by watching a youtube video of someone else playing it. He really inspired me to try and learn piano again, it's such a great skill to have.
